The max loss

7 min readLesson 40

Static and trailing floors, with worked examples of each.

The max loss is the overall floor your equity may never cross. Crossing it ends the account immediately. How the floor is set depends on the program.

Static (2-Step)

floor = initial balance − 10% of initial balance

On a $100,000 account the floor is $90,000, forever. Profits do not raise it; a run of losses down to $90,001 is still allowed.

End-of-day trailing (1-Step)

floor = highest midnight balance − 10% of initial balance

The floor follows your best end-of-day balance upwards and never moves down.

  • Start: floor $90,000.
  • You end a day at $106,000. Floor rises to $96,000.
  • You lose back to $100,000. The floor stays at $96,000.

Intraday trailing (Instant)

floor = highest balance after any closed trade − 10% of initial balance

The same idea, but it rises after every closed trade at a new high, not only at midnight.

Strategy implications

  • With a static floor, early profits create a cushion. Many traders lock in a buffer before taking larger risks.
  • With a trailing floor, profits do not create a cushion: the floor follows you. Keep risk steady; do not get looser because the balance is up.

Watching it live
