Forex trading hours and sessions
When the market is busy, when it is quiet, and how to choose your trading window.
Forex trades from Sunday evening to Friday evening, but activity is not even across the day. It follows the business hours of the world's financial centres.
The three sessions
| Session | Centre | Approximate hours (UTC) | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asian | Tokyo, Sydney, Singapore | 23:00 – 08:00 | Calmer; yen and Australian dollar most active |
| European | London, Frankfurt | 07:00 – 16:00 | The busiest session; big moves in EUR, GBP and CHF |
| North American | New York | 12:00 – 21:00 | US data at 12:30–14:00 UTC; dollar pairs most active |
Times shift by an hour with daylight saving.
The overlap
From roughly 12:00 to 16:00 UTC London and New York are both open. This is the most liquid part of the day, with the tightest spreads and the largest moves in EUR/USD, GBP/USD and gold.
The weekly cycle
The week opens on Sunday evening with Asian trading. Prices can gap if something happened over the weekend. On Friday afternoon liquidity drains as traders close positions, and the market closes at 17:00 New York time.
Choosing your window
Pick a session that fits your life and suits your instruments:
- Trading the yen or Aussie dollar? The Asian session is your home.
- Trading EUR/USD or GBP/USD? London and the overlap give you the most opportunity.
- Trading US indices or shares? The New York session, after the 13:30 UTC open, is essential.
Trading consistently at the same time of day lets you learn how your instruments behave in that window.
