Keeping a trading journal

5 min readLesson 35

What to record, how to tag trades and how to turn notes into improvements.

A journal turns experience into lessons. Without one, traders repeat the same mistakes for years and remember only their best and worst trades.

What to record

The platform already records the numbers: instrument, direction, size, prices, costs and result. Add what only you know:

  • Why you took the trade, in one sentence.
  • The setup tag, such as pullback, breakout, range.
  • Your state: calm, rushed, bored, frustrated.
  • One lesson, even on winners.

Open Trading Journal under Tools & Services, expand any closed trade and add the note and tags.

Using tags

After 20–30 trades, filter the journal by tag. The summary cards show trades, net result and win rate per tag. You will often find that one setup pays for everything and another quietly drains the account. Stop trading the second one.

Weekly review

  1. Count rule breaks. One rule break is worth more attention than five losing trades taken correctly.
  2. Compare results by setup tag and by time of day.
  3. Pick one thing to improve next week.

Download the full history as CSV from Downloads if you want to analyse it in a spreadsheet.
